Our Journey To CrossFit....

ERIN ALPHONSO, Box Manager, Coach, Nutrition Specialist

From a young age I have had a passion for fitness and health. Not only because of the physical changes that being active provides; but also the mental benefits associated with living an active lifestyle.

In my early twenties after facing an intense battle with anxiety and panic disorder I decided to do the one thing that scared me the most at the time, and that was to become an fitness instructor. I had always been shy, but this was the one time I knew that my passion was greater than my fear. After great mentorship, and a few months of training I had finally achieved my goal.

Since that time I have continued to develop my health and fitness knowledge which has essentially lead me to use CrossFit as my main fitness program. CrossFit for me represents the key reasons why I am so passionate about fitness, and why I think it is the best option for anyone who desires to increase their fitness level. It is constantly challenging, it combines the best fitness practices to create results you can be proud of, and it comes with a community of team mates who are there to cheer you on while you train to become the best you possible.

If I were to give advice to anyone new to CrossFit it would be to believe in yourself, listen to the cheers of others and jump in with both feet. You deserve to live your best life, and incorporating a community and program such as CrossFit will inspire you to do just that.

DARRYL ALPHONSO, Head Coach, Box Programming, Weightlifting Coach

3, 2, 1 GO! … In my early years I played Hockey during the winter and kept busy in the summer with Softball. Prior to joining CrossFit I was training in Thai Boxing and used jogging, cycling, and traditional weight training as auxiliary components of my work out routine.  I severely injured my knee in a motor vehicle accident (compound fracture) which side lined any and all training, it was a hard pill to swallow but I had to put training on the back burner. Hello rehab. During my rehabilitation I began educating myself on my injury and wanted to ensure I was back at or close to 100% (really hoping to be at 110%+). During rehab, my wife Erin thought it would be a good idea to look into “CrossFit” as she knew I would eventually need something that fulfilled my adrenaline rush. I slowly removed myself from conventional rehab and used CrossFit as my new method of rehabilitation. In December of 2010 I was introduced to this thing called a WOD, and have not turned back since.  Every day being a new challenge and new experience made me gravitate towards this method of training and it soon became habitual. CrossFit has encouraged me to reach a level of fitness I did not know existed, which has expanded my character and determination to push and succeed in all areas of life. Witnessing that this system is highly effective lead me to obtain my CrossFit Level 1 Training Certificate.  I did not only want to gain a deeper understanding of the methodologies, I wanted the opportunity to help others experience what I have experienced. I continue to absorb as much info as possible, constantly learning, as this journey is never ending. In my classes I offer a non-judgmental environment where participants know they will be guided into proper form and technique, while challenging them so that they can meet and exceed their fitness goals. … TIME!

My journey to CrossFit began in April of 2015 a time in my life when I was craving a challenge in my fitness routine as well as in my life as a whole.  My brother had been trying to convince me for a long time to "just try CrossFit" but I never believed I had it in me to be able to do such intense workouts.  I decided I was more suited for a more mild "bootcamp" type exercise.  However, after much research I kept being lead back to a "CrossFit bootcamp".  So, with a little bit of courage and a lot of hesitation I decided to sign myself up.  I completed six weeks of CrossFit bootcamp which eased me into regular CrossFit classes, and the rest is history!

Prior to CrossFit, I was an active person as I ran, cycled, and dabbled in both competitive as well as intramural sports. I soon found CrossFit was the challenge I had been missing, both mentally and physically. I am now lifting weights I never imagined I could lift and am feeling stronger than I ever thought I would. I really enjoy the variety of movements that CrossFit exposes you to; that feeling of accomplishment you get after doing each workout and being part of a close knit community who is cheering you on every day to be the best you can be.

Obtaining my level 1 coaching was a way for me to dive a little deeper into the science behind CrossFit and a more technical look at all movements, but also a way for me to help others discover how strong and capable they really are.  With all of that being said, lets WOD!

We all have to start somewhere. As someone possessing a strong athletic background, I've had my share of setbacks, pauses and restarts. In becoming a coach I want to encourage and support the new mom, the person who has had a setback or injury, the full-time student working 2 part-time jobs, the person who's lived their entire life as a non-athlete, the grandparent who wants to play with their grandchildren, and especially the average Jane/Joe. You can get the physical and mental strength to live your fullest life by doing CrossFit. You just need to start!  That is the beauty of it; anyone can do it, it doesn't take a lot of time, and the community that is built is the icing on the cake of support. That's why I love CrossFit.

After finishing my first half marathon in less than two hours, I knew I needed a harder challenge. In full transparency, my birthday weekend did leave me a bit dehydrated; but that just added to overcoming the challenge. A CrossFit box opened within walking distance of my home and I decided to check them out. Whaaaaaaaaat!!! The assessment was simple: wall balls, box jump and burpee's, 2 rounds of 10... simple body weight movements and I was dead. So obviously I fell in love.

CrossFit's specialty is not specializing. This is the mantra I've been living my entire life.  I ran track & cross country throughout school; finished first place in shot put and athlete of the year in junior school. Played volley ball, football, rugby in high school; received academic excellence for athletics. Developed a pulse for weight training; became a personal trainer (currently a canfitpro Personal Training Specialist).  Taught group fitness classes at the YMCA.  Continued running; Boston Marathon 2015, Try-a-Tri 2016... and I hold the utmost respect for tri-athletes.  Now I'm a CrossFit-Level 1 Trainer. Oh and I forgot to mention that I'm an Accountant by trade with a Master of Finance. I like my life the same way I like my workouts: filled with variety!

So what does my future in CrossFit look like? I have no clue but as long as the challenges are constantly varied, I'll be there motivating your movement, supporting your mental growth  and pushing you, the athlete, to new PRs. Arrrrrrgh Yaaaaaah! (the sound you make when you hit a PR)

"I'm not telling you it's going to be easy, I'm telling you it's going to be worth it." ~ Art Williams

So if you ever want to throw down... come check me out at Northern Touch CrossFit.

3, 2, 1 ... Kill it!

Growing up as the youngest of 3 kids, competition was a part of everyday life for me. Everything turned into a question of “who could do it best?” And this mindset has stuck with me through the years – always pushing myself to be better. I was a competitive ski racer the majority of my life and I think that is where my adrenaline addiction started. That feeling of being in a start gate and hearing “Racer ready? 3…2…1…GO!” is the same feeling I get before every crossfit WOD!

Besides sports and fitness, travel is my passion and really the reason that I found crossfit. I made the decision to climb Mt Kilimanjaro and had little time to train. It was fate that one day on my Instagram feed an ad for a 6 week bootcamp at Northern Touch Crossfit came up. The timing was perfect and I thought once it was done I would leave for my climb and never go back to the box. I couldn’t have been more wrong! It was a combination of the members, the workouts, the support, and the atmosphere Erin and Darryl create every day that drew me right back after my climb.

Knowing the positive impact crossfit has had on me, both physically and mentally, is what led me to obtain my Crossfit Level 1 Training Certificate. I not only wanted to further my own understanding and knowledge, but I wanted to be able to pass that on to others so they could see for themselves the amazing benefits of CrossFit. You never know what can accomplish until you try and then try even harder. See you at the box!

Growing up as a child, I was always in the last group of people to be picked for a team. A distinct lack of confidence in my athletic ability developed and carried over into other areas of my life.

I heard of CrossFit from my mom in my mid-teens and she encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and into an area which I thought was beyond my ability. With my moms encouragement and support, she brought me to Northern Touch CrossFit, a place where I began a journey both physically and mentally in my formative years.

The coaches and members inspired me to see the potential I had to be the best version of myself. I slowly began to drop the hesitation and skepticism towards my own athletic ability, and joined into the idea that with the right effort and the right people surrounding you, the sky is the limit.

This newfound confidence and well being assembled right here at NTC has led me down a path of health, happiness and confidence that I am grateful to carry around in my everyday life. It feels as though I take one step closer to the true Logan every single day. I believe everyone deserves the opportunity to push their limits and to see who they really are. A world of opportunities will open up when you do. See you at the box!

MICHAEL RUFFO aka “Ruffo”, Coach

Flashback to the summer of 2017. I’d just finished 15 years of competing in various Toughest Firefighter competitions. As a life long athlete I’ve always valued physical activity and sport for the discipline it brought to my life as well as the lessons learned and fabulous friendships that came along with it. So needless to say when that moment in 2017 settled in on me I realized there was a void. However, not for long. Enter CrossFit. My son recently started CrossFit and my introduction to it was through him. I remember sitting there watching him take part in classes and thought, hmmm, I think this could be for me. The variety of movements and fast pace of the classes were very intriguing. Needless to say I jumped in with both feet. The environment, and people at NTC are first rate. Attaining my Level One is my way of giving back to our community. My passion for helping others move better, live a healthy life and the confidence it brings is a huge reward. I look forward to working with the NTC family over the coming months in a fun, and encouraging environment.

LEANNE BLANCE, Running Specialist

I have a varied life story of athleticism. I never thought of myself as an ‘athlete’. Coming from a house hold where my brother was the professional soccer player, I was in gymnastics, dance and acrobatics from the age of the 3 to 17  (Insert my love of the handstands, bar work and calisthenics movements).

Fast forward to adult life. After the birth of my first child, I truly started to explore a fitness routine. Post partum, I had gained 50 pounds with my pregnancy, was a recent ex-smoker, diagnosed with high cholesterol and blood pressure. I joined a gym and tried to figure it out. I was inspired by my best friend’s impressive running experiences and skill, I decided to take it up.  I never turned back! Running since 2004, I have completed several races from 5km to the full marathon. There’s nothing like running through the finish line after all the miles of work put into training.

I feel that running really defined me as a person. In 2015, I was asked through my employer to run a leg of the Pan Am games as a torch bearer while the torch was in Toronto. This was a huge honour and highlight of my 40th year on earth.  Into my 12th year of solely running, I was finding that my race times weren’t improving. The same friend suggested complimenting running with a cross training program. She had success with CrossFit. I really had no idea what it was, yet I had been wanting to really give a go. I had just completed a bucket list race, Around the Bay 30km, that I trained really hard for but still didn’t do my best. I decided to do something about it.  I discovered that a new Crossfit box had opened in Scarborough. I came to Northern Touch for a one on one session with Darryl and have been a member since.  Never did I think I would be throwing weights around like this, I have truly surprised myself.

I am so excited be part of the run club at NTC!  Running can help your endurance in a WOD, improve cardiovascular strength and it layers in an extra element of challenge to your fitness regimen. It doesn’t matter how fast you are, slow, steady, whatever, training is the race, race day is just the victory lap!
